The 'Rat Pack' Although originally coined to describe the group of Hollywood actors and friends centered around Humphrey Bogart (legend has it, by Lauren Bacall - to describe Bogart and friends after returning from a night in Las Vegas), the term Rat Pack has today come to describe the group of entertainers Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin from the late fifties and early sixties. They themseves preferred to be known as 'The Summit' or 'The Clan'! The singing style was cool and jazzy, often with a swing style big band accompniament - a sophisticated goodtime sound - though sometimes with a more unbuttoned 'after-hours' and intimate feel: smoke, saxophones and melancholy. Whatever the mood, the songs are always the great 'standards' of popular song. |

Since then the term 'Rat Pack' has stuck, and now many performers pay tribute to the unique sound of the Rat Pack singers by evoking the style, and songs of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis and Dean Martin. |
