What is Jazz?

As the great Jazz-man Louis Armstrong said: 'If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know.'

All the Jazz styles evolved over the last century or so are still played and are still popular, attracting a diverse audience. Many bands can switch between a wide range of styles as the need arises, some specialise in particular genres... Needless to say we have  representitives of all the major Jazz styles on our books.

Dixieland ('Trad') Jazz and Vintage Jazz

Dixieland is still popular as a 'goodtime' music, unsurprising as its genesis was the legendary good-time city, New Orleans. Generally, the musicians play without the need for amplification so it lends itself to outdoor venues where it invariably creates a festival atmosphere - and puts a smile on every face!

Jazz - Dixieland

Swing and the Big Bands

A more sophisticated sound ideal for evening entertainment and dancing. This style is played by bands of varying sizes from smaller more intimate night-club sounds to full blown Big Bands with large brass sections. Many feature vocal soloists who have a range of songs that will entertain a wide audience, not only jazz lovers. The current popularity of the 'Rat-Pack' repertoire shows how enduring the appeal of this music is.
